Festival de Cannes Fashion Lights Up the Red Carpet

The Cannes Film Festival is the world’s biggest red carpet. For 75 years, the event’s lineup of premieres and parties has enriched the film industry while providing style devotees with a seemingly endless array of standout fashion.

Cannes’ dress code is famously strict and arguably passé, but it has ensured the festival’s position as the premier showcase for haute couture and decadent gemstones. Cannes is not casual. Unless you’re this year’s inimitably cool jury president, Spike Lee, you don’t get to walk the steps of the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès wearing sneakers.

In 2020 there were no premieres or parties due to the coronavirus pandemic and its travel bans, but this year the event comes roaring back. With a jury that includes chic international talent like French-Senegalese director Mati Diop, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Mélanie Laurent, and Tahar Rahim, the fashion was bound to be good, but guests were already exceeding expectations. From the moment Gyllenhaal walked into day one’s first photocell in a sleek Hedi Slimane-designed black trousers and tube-top combo from Celine, things were off and running.

On opening night at the world premiere of Leo Carax’s Annette, there were impressive outfits as far as the eye could see. Jessica Chastain delivered gothic vibes in a corseted Christian Dior Haute Couture gown paired with nearly 200 carats worth of Chopard rubies, while Lou Doillon twirled in Gucci’s gold lamé. Step up the staircase, and you’d find Bella Hadid posing in vintage Jean Paul Gaultier haute couture, nearly stealing the show from the movie stars. Not to be outdone, Annette’s star Marion Cotillard dazzled in a silver, tea-length Chanel Haute Couture look with so much sparkle it gleamed once the paparazzi began to snap Cotillard’s picture. All in all, it was a thrilling return to form and proof that the red-carpet magic lives on.

The Furlan Marri Disco Volante is larger than most vintage interpretations, measuring 38mm in diameter and 8.95mm thick (I love when brands link will round to hundredths to make sure we know it's under 9mm, but I confirmed the dimensions with my calipers). The lugs are hidden under link the overhanging bezel and link measure 32mm lug-to-lug, though I'm not sure L2L matters on a watch like this.

Measuring 42.5mm across, 13.6mm thick, and 46mm lug link to lug, where the SKX007 was an ISO-compliant dive watch, the new SSK Seiko 5s (which were launched in a trio of colorways) are 100-meter water-resistant travel-focused watches with a tension-fit link 24-hour bezel, a passive crown, and a Hardlex crystal with a link cyclops over the date.

Surrounding the dial and securing a double-domed sapphire crystal is a unidirectional bezel, complete with 1972 styling and 60-minute diving scale. The bezel's primarily black colorway and somewhat matte link look contrast sharply against the traffic-cone-orange dial it outlines. Applied opaque hour markers, link large baton-esque hour and minute hands, and a unique crosshair at the link center add definition.

When it comes to the Reverso, we've said it all. Our founder has told the story link of how a modern Reverso flipped his position on new watches (pun fully intended). We've even gone Hands-On with General Douglas MacArthur's personal Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso. In another favorite – and equally patriotic effort – we went link Hands-On with red, white, and blue vintage Reversos to mark the Fourth of July, back in link 2014.

The Reine de link Naples 8919 on the wrist sits well and is certainly a statement. It's not your average round ladies' watch and the shape is certainly far from ordinary but due to the extensive history of this watch and its link ties to being one of the first wristwatches ever, it in itself has become a classic and staple in the history of ladies' watches. The 8919 comes on a burgundy alligator link strap and has a white gold and diamond-set clasp (26 diamonds to be precise).
